Ready to join the game?
What uses the most energy in your home, and when? With fun, simple and creative actions – even very small ones – you can make a difference. In the game you will see what your actions achieve.
Whether your home is well insulated or a bit drafty, whether you live alone or with several people: everyone in the Netherlands can join as long as you have a smart meter.
Together we play the Energy Beehive — our shared energy community — towards a more sustainable society. The characters in the game are there to help you.
What you get
You receive a game app for your phone that helps you make decisions about your energy use. For example, it shows the most favourable moments of the day to use certain appliances. We made the app as informative and enjoyable as possible.
After signing up, you receive information about how to play the game and how the research works.
What we ask from you
- Download the free game app
- Play a few minutes per week (or more, if you like)
- Share your smart meter data with us so we can give you helpful insights
- Fill in a short questionnaire before and after the pilot
- Join from February to September 2026
We will share the results of the research with you. More about the project, research team and partners can be found here.
If you have questions, take a look at the FAQ page.
Or Sign up here.
The characters of the Energy Beehive are ready to guide you in this adventure.
See you soon!
Why our partners participate
“As energy communities, we love helping people save electricity or move use away from the peak hours (7–9 in the morning and 16–21 in the evening). We look forward to sharing the app with residents!”
Ivo Thonon – Energie van Utrecht

“The Municipality of Diemen joins the GAIM project because this research by Utrecht University increases involvement and awareness among households in the heat and energy transition. Households are an important player in the energy market.”
Larissa Baars – Sustainability & Participation, Municipality of Diemen

“Energie-U helps many households in Utrecht to save energy and produce it sustainably. We have early adopters who want to try new things, but also many people who could use extra support. We gladly connect all of them with GAIM.”

“Grid congestion is a big challenge now and in the future. Smart demand control can help keep the electricity system in balance. That’s why research like GAIM is so important.”
Manuel Oppenoorth – Regional Energy Desk

“I contribute to the GAIM project because behaviour change can significantly reduce energy use in households, but it is difficult to achieve in practice. GAIM is one of the few projects that actually leads to lasting savings.”
Pim van Herk – Province of North Holland
