We are a research team at Utrecht University working together with public and private partners.
Households play an increasingly active role in the energy transition. With smart technology and a game app, households can learn and make their own choices about energy. The researchers study whether energy use changes while playing the game, and whether the game platform, AI and models work as intended. We also study how much participants feel empowered to make decisions afterwards. With these insights, we make recommendations to lawmakers, policymakers, partners, participants and the general public. The research brings together many areas: technology, social sciences, design and privacy.

Name and logo

The name Energy Beehive was chosen after a long search. Together with households we looked for a name that expressed energy, gaming, community, cooperation and home life — a bit like a beehive.
Because the game will also be played in other countries, we chose the English name: Energy Beehive.
Game studio IJsfontein designed the logo.

The Energy Beehive will first be played in three countries in two projects:
In the Netherlands in the GAIM project (Gaming + AI + Modelling).

And in Sweden and Spain in the RESCHOOL project.
